Regenerative Agriculture for the Home Garden - Online

by Compost Education Centre

Learn techniques for building healthy resilient gardens that withstand drought and pest stresses in our changing and challenging climate.

About this Event

What is regenerative agriculture? Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of the soil.

Come and explore how we can implement regenerative practices in our home gardens. Learn techniques for building healthy resilient gardens that can withstand drought and pest stresses through innovative practices such as no-dig gardening, perennial food crops, mulches and cover-cropping, deep-litter small flock systems, wood chip gardening and more. Now more than ever our gardens can provide us with the inspiration and small scale practice required for a changing, more challenging climate.

This is an online workshop.

Instructor Bio:

Solara Goldwynn and her husband Tayler Krawczyk own and manage Hatchet & Seed, an edible landscaping & ecological design company based in Victoria, BC. Since 2011, they've been transforming underutilized spaces into thriving edible ecosystems (in urban and rural landscapes). They also practice regenerative agriculture in their own backyard in Vic West, with integrated chicken coop + compost systems, light greywater re-use, edible plant nursery, rain gardens, greenhouses, fruit trees, and no-dig veggie gardens; all on 1/10th of an acre rented city lot.

The Compost Education Centre is located on unceded and occupied Indigenous territories, specifically the land of the Lekwungen speaking people—the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations. These nations are two of many, made up of individuals who have lived within the porous boundaries of what is considered Coast Salish, Nuu-Chah-Nulth and Kwakwa'wakw Territory (Vancouver Island) since time immemorial. At the CEC we seek to respect, honour and continually grow our own understandings of Indigenous rights and history, and to fulfill our responsibilities as settlers, who live and work directly with the land and its complex, vital ecologies and our diverse, evolving communities.

About this Event

In this time of COVID-19 and racial injustice much is being revealed and done within the unjust industrial food system. Growing your food is one of the most radical acts. In recognition of Black August (a time of self-determination Kujichagulia, learning Black history and remembering the fallen Black Freedom Fighters) urban grower Jacqueline Smith is offering weekly virtual workshops on how to have a fall garden during the month of August. If you missed your chance to have a summer vegetable garden this year all is not lost. The Fall gardening season is still abundant with fresh vegetables waiting for you to harvest. Let’s honor Black August by growing and securing our own food.

Nor Cal Landscape & Nursery Show

https://norcaltradeshow.org/

Since 1980 the Nor Cal Spring Trade Show has brought to the Bay Area a one-day horticultural trade show that keeps pace with our rapidly changing industry and provides a forum for doing business in a timely fashion. In 2014 Nor Cal announced a partnership with the California Landscape Contractors Association creating a more diverse and appealing show for the green industry. Along with this new partnership is a new name for the show – The Nor Cal Landscape & Nursery Show.

Nor Cal was originally created by members of four chapters of the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers (Central, Monterey Bay, Peninsula and Redwood Empire) who saw a need and created a regional trade show for those who could not afford the time or expense of traveling to larger shows of this caliber. From card tables in a community hall to the carpeted aisles of Expo Hall, the Nor Cal Spring Trade Show has found a niche in San Mateo.

This year you’ll find an expanded group of exhibitors with products ranging from landscape equipment, specimen plant material and irrigation to the popular garden art, statuary and fountain categories. Check out the exhibitor listings for a full overview of the show’s offerings. You’ll also find educational opportunities with continuing education credits. Plan on a full day at the Nor Cal Landscape & Nursery Show – we believe it will be time well spent!

Author's Talk - Jeff Moore - Spiny Succulents

https://baynature.org/event/authors-talk-jeff-moore-spiny-succulents/

$10-$57

Spiny Succulents is Jeff Moore’s follow up to Soft Succulents; the spiky yin to the velvety yang. (Jeff Moore is owner of Solana Succulents, a small retail specialty nursery in Solana Beach. This book will be his fourth publication.) Join Jeff for a presentation featuring the mostly spiny sculptural succulents – cacti, euphorbias, pachypodiums, alluaudias, and even some ‘succulent adjacent’ spinies, including terrestrial bromeliads, cycads, and other plants that belong in the conversation.

There will be some introductory habitat images, in addition to plant photos from faraway places growing here in California and the desert Southwest. Most images are of mature specimen plants, taken in collector or grower’s yards or botanical gardens (including the Ruth Bancroft Garden). Jeff will discuss them from a grower/collector’s perspective, and offer any insights about incorporating them in your own garden.

Books will be available for purchase on the day of the presentation and Jeff will be signing books after the talk. (You have an option to pre-purchase the Spiny Succulents book with your lecture ticket. The book retails for $39.95 plus tax.)
